Free Run One – Dionysos Avramides
An exhibition of new work by Sydney based Artist Dionysos Avramides.
Free Run One is an exercise in movement, methods, and materiality.
About the artist
For those who don’t already know, who are you, and what do you do?
My name is Dionysos Avramides or Dion for short, I’m an early career artist from Sydney. I have been showing work in group and solo exhibitions interstate and overseas.
What can people expect to see at your exhibition?
The show will be an installation of mainly works of paper and hopefully some metal sculptures out of car parts.
How did you go about creating the work? Can you describe some of the process?
This show is about my obsession with the Nike Free Run shoe. It started when I was living in a big sharehouse, There was always one really old Nike Free Run 5.0 Lying around. To put it simply one day I came home and there was some charcoal and paper on the table and I just started to sketch it.
What are some key themes or inspiration behind the show?
It always begins with the shape of the shoe; The tongue, the laces, the pattern underneath and the infamous tick.
Metaphorically, when I draw it, I’m free running. The shape of the shoe disintegrates into abstract patterns, shapes and flow. When I’m running i feel quite dispondent, just enjoying where it will take me. The outcome is never relevant, it’s in the exercise of drawing I am flexing this creative muscle.
