“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”

-Pablo Picasso

'I am very serious about the non-seriousness of my art. That is not to say that I don’t invest huge amounts of time and energy into my practice. On the contrary, I am utterly in love and lust with art. This show represents a years worth of learning to forget the rules and the need to conceptualise every mark on the page. It’s a revival of visual pleasure and authentic expression; free from the throbbing theoretical headache of contemporary art today.

I guess you could say this show is my art school rehabilitation. After studying a degree in art history and theory, I became increasingly frustrated by an institution that propagates an understanding of art that alienates rather than inspires. I felt stuck. So I decided I was going to relearn how to create like a child; to explore and experiment and play, simply because that’s what I’m compelled to do as a human.

Hanging on the gallery walls will be my scribbles, my mistakes, my breakthroughs and every other step in between. More than anything, I want you to experience my pictures however you feel like it. I’m really just making it all up as I go along.' - Amy Summer
